Fatal Flooding: Driver dies in rising water in NE Arkansas

Update:

INDEPENDENCE COUNTY, Ark. — Arkansas State Police have identified the drowning victim as 76-year-old Loyd Cockrell.

Arkansas State Troopers and Independence County Sheriff’s Deputies recovered Cockrell’s body this morning near the Cord community.

Original Story:

JACKSON COUNTY, Ark. — Authorities in Northeast Arkansas say a man died after driving around four barracides during flooding Friday evening.

According to KAIT, the body was recovered along Highway 37 near Elgin.

KAIT reports the driver, whose name hasn’t been released, was supposed to make a delivery in Batesville Friday evening. He never made it.

His vehicle was located by Independence County deputies early Saturday.

Jackson County Sheriff David Lucas told KAIT it appeared the driver went around four barricades in place for flooding on Highway 37.

Sheriff Lucas went on to say the death was a senseless tragedy. He stressed the need for drivers to obey barricades for their own safety.
