LITTLE ROCK, AR – The faces of parents and family of students at Hall High School in Little Rock show the shock of hearing the news Monday.

“It scares me … it concerns me,” said Lesley Hicks whose daughters attend school there.

It was news from officials that a 9 millimeter handgun and a loaded magazine were taken from a student inside a classroom.

The gun was empty but the unnamed student did hand over a magazine with 6 bullets inside.

A relieved parent, Gene Hicks said, “Apparently whatever plan they have in place is working.”

According to the school district security officers found the gun inside a student’s hoodie during a random classroom search; something the school says they do in five classrooms once a day which is more than district requirements.

Teisha Plummer was thankful for that but said, “That’s good but I should have gotten a phone call that they found a handgun on campus.”

Most parents we spoke with heard the news from us while their children were leaving the campus to get to their rides.

It wasn’t until about 3:30 p.m. when parents said they started receiving an automated message saying “During a scan at Hall High a gun was found on a student.”

Keilan Stephens graduated from Hall himself in 2011 and says some of the same things happened in his day.

“They should have scans before they go into school I think.”

While picking up his sister though he says he’s thankful it was caught this day.

“In other states … other things going on with people killing people,” he remarked. “I’m just glad that this time they got to it before it happened.”

The student in question was taken in by Little Rock Police and faces charges of possession of a handgun on school grounds.

The district said this was an isolated event however, finding this gun and ammunition led school security to conduct a full scan of the entire student body. They did not find any additional weapons.

Original Story:
LITTLE ROCK, AR – A high school student in Little Rock was arrested after being found with a gun and loaded magazine Monday.

According to LRSD, a random scan at Hall High School found an unloaded 9mm gun and the magazine on a 16-year-old student. According to police, the student was arrested, charged with possession of a handgun by a minor on school grounds, and taken to juvenile intake.

The district says safety and security personnel confiscated the gun and magazine, and the student was disciplined according to the student handbook.

LRSD officials say information received indicates that this was an isolated event, but as a result of the discovery, Little Rock Police school-based resource officers and security personnel are conducting a full school scan of the student body.

LRSD requires quarterly scans of all students on campuses, three random scans of students and two random scans of lockers. Schools may elect to do them more frequently. Hall conducts one random scan of five rooms daily.

In a news release, LRSD stated the following:

“Please be assured we are constantly working to ensure the safety of the student body, faculty and staff of all students. We will provide you additional information as it becomes available. If you have further concerns or questions, feel free to contact principal, John Daniels, at 501-447-1902.”
