Man Arrested After Stealing Elderly Couple’s Car

LITTLE ROCK, AR – These days Jo and Jim Smith spend quite a bit of time at doctor’s offices. It’s part of staying healthy when you’re nearly ninety.

Their latest stop however, had negative side-effects but they didn’t have anything to do with the visit itself.

“He was standing there by the door when we went in,” Jim remembered the man as he left his car near the front door of the Baptist Health Eye Clinic Tuesday (3/31).

He left it there so he could help his wife walk inside. As soon as he went back out to park however his 2006 Mercury Grand Marquee was gone.

He said, “Looked around and this guy is taking off in my car.”

There really wasn’t anything he could do.

“It’s a funny feeling,” he added. “You think well it’s gone and that’s about it.”

As their car was seemingly gone for good they did still call Little Rock Police and gave them their information.

In all her years Jo had never seen anything like this before.

She figured, “He was standing there, saw two old people and took advantage of us and I think that’s pretty sad.”

Almost written off for good, Thursday (4/2) morning at 3:00 they got the call about their car.

LRPD told them they found the car and made an arrest. According to reports, Talib Rasheed, 57, was found in their car in Little Rock but the car had different plates.

Jo explained, “They stopped him and they looked at the plate and the car and checked them and they didn’t match.”

Rasheed faces theft by receiving charges.

While thankful they’ll get their car back, the Smith’s are grateful that’s all that was taken.

She went on, “Yeah it could have been worse.”

The Smith’s will have their car returned to them Friday.

They say officers told them the car fortunately seems to be in good shape.
