BENTON, AR – Benton police are investigating the abuse of a 3-month-old boy who was taken to Arkansas Children’s Hospital with cracked ribs and a broken leg Monday.
Detectives believe this is not the first time the baby boy has been abused. Lt. Kevin Russell with the Benton Police Department says 30-year-old Christopher Williams has been arrested and charged with endangering the welfare of a minor, and battery. “Thankfully this is something we don’t see very often, but when we do see these types of cases, it’s just heartbreaking, especially involving that small of a child.”
Williams lives at the Hurricane Lake Mobile Home Park. Police are not releasing what events led to the baby’s injuries, or who noticed the abuse and reported it, but Lt. Russell says he’s glad someone did. “If you know of a child being abused, or possibly being abused, call your local law enforcement or police department and let us know about it so we can at least look into it.”
The case is being handled by the Department of Human Services. Spokesperson Amy Webb says it is important caregivers watch for signs and symptoms of child abuse, and offer to help someone who may be feeling overwhelmed or frustrated. “All they may need is someone to talk to or some time by themselves.”
Webb says often times child abuse stems from babies constant crying and adults not knowing how to handle the situation. “Our ultimate goal is to make sure children are safe and protected. That’s our responsibility, that’s our role.” That’s why DHS recommends having a plan in place so no child ends up getting hurt.
Williams is being held at the Saline County Detention Facility. He is expected to appear in court next week.
