LITTLE ROCK, AR — A Marion woman has been arrested for Medicaid fraud after an investigation by the Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit.
According to Attorney General Dustin McDaniel, 28-year-old Samantha Shelley is accused of seeking payment from the Arkansas Medicaid program for work she did not perform.
Shelley provided in-home health care services in Crittenden County for Medicaid beneficiaries who receive outpatient assistance as an alternative to being placed in a nursing home, and allegedly submitted fraudulent time sheets seeking payment for time she allegedly worked for a Medicaid beneficiary, McDaniel says.
Investigators determined Shelley’s actions defrauded the Medicaid program of $846.38 cents, according to the attorney general’s office.
“Any time a health-care worker fraudulently bills Medicaid, it costs beneficiaries and the taxpayers who support this needed program,” McDaniel said in a news release. “Our Medicaid Fraud Control Unit investigates any type of fraud, or neglect and abuse in nursing homes, and I encourage anyone with information about Medicaid fraud to contact our office.”
Investigators with the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit began investigating Shelley earlier this year after a representative of Crittenden Adult Care Services notified the unit that they believed she had submitted time sheets for services she had not performed. Investigators talked to relatives of a Medicaid beneficiary who said that Shelley did not work on Saturdays and Sundays during the time period from Dec. 9, 2012, to Dec. 30, 2012, although she claimed to have done so.
Shelley was arrested Wednesday and taken to the Pulaski County Jail, where she was charged with Medicaid fraud and released on $2,500 bond.
