WAUKEE, IA – Former Arkansas Governor-turned TV host Mike Huckabee has explained to a crowd in Iowa why he’s against same sex marriage.
Speaking in Waukee on Tuesday, Huckabee said his opposition is grounded in the teachings of the Bible.
The remarks by the possible Republican presidential candidate in 2016 came during his keynote address at the Faith and Freedom Coalition dinner.
“I’ve heard people argue with me and say ‘Well, Jesus never said anything about marriage. I said ‘Yes, he actually did.’ A man shall leave his father and mother and a woman shall leave her home and the two will become one flesh. That’s a marriage ceremony if I’ve ever heard one. Look, I’m not against anyone. I’m really not. I’m not a hater. I’m not homophobic,” he told the crowd. “I honestly don’t care what people do personally in their individual lives, but I tell ya the reason when people say, ‘Why don’t you just kind of get on the right side of history?’ I said, ‘You’ve got to understand, this for me is not about the right side or the wrong side of history, this is the right side of the Bible and unless God rewrites it, edits it, sends it down with his signature on it, it’s not my book to change. Folks, that’s why I stand where I stand.”
Huckabee has yet to announce if he’ll make a second run for the White House.
