LITTLE ROCK, AR – Monday night, a Little Rock mother escaped the Plaza Tower Apartment fire with her infant daughter. She, along with about two-hundred other people, rushed out of the building around 8 p.m.
Sharon Jackson says she was making dinner on the ninth floor when the fire started in a unit on a lower level. She called 911, and firefighters came to her rescue.
“I pushed the window screen out, and I’m hanging out, and I’m hollering out tenants. Tenants here that live at Plaza Towers was telling the fire department, running up to them telling them there’s a year old baby up there, there’s a year old baby up there. Well, they got everybody else out, out of the building, out of the ladder, basically, the majority,” says Jackson.
“So, people were going out the windows?” asked FOX16’s Kelly Dudzik.
“They was taking them out a ladder. Well, they wouldn’t put a ladder up for me and my daughter. It took me over 25 to 30 minutes to get them out of there,” said Jackson.
The Little Rock Fire Department tells FOX16 they got to the woman in a timely fashion and she refused to come down at one point.
Jackson and the rest of the residents boarded CATA buses around 10 p.m. The American Red Cross is helping them find places to stay for the night. Little Rock Police do not know yet when the people who live at the apartments will be allowed back into their units.
