New venue sought for SAU horse theft trial

MAGNOLIA, Ark. (AP) — The attorney for a former Southern Arkansas University rodeo team member accused of stealing five horses from the school is seeking a new venue for his client’s trial.

Attorney Michael Lusk filed the request for 20-year-old Jaci Jackson, who faces several theft charges.

The Texarkana Gazette reports that a pretrial hearing is scheduled for July 19, with the trial scheduled for July 26 in Magnolia.

Jackson’s attorney argues that potential jurors in Columbia County are prejudiced against Jackson and that a fair and impartial trial isn’t possible.

Jackson is accused in the theft of the horses, a trailer and tack from the Mulerider Stables. She faces animal cruelty charges in Oklahoma, where a horse named Credit Card was found dead with its throat slashed.
