CLEBURNE COUNTY, AR- A family day of boating on Greers Ferry took a tragic turn Saturday when a young woman and her older brother drowned.

Witnesses say eight family members and friends were out on a 24-foot pontoon boat they rented for a day out on the lake.  Around 11:30 am the woman, 26, jumped in for a swim.

When she began to struggle, her 33-year-old brother jump in to help.

But as the brother tried to get his sister back to the boat, strong winds were blowing the boat away, and they couldn’t catch up.

“It’s probably one of the windiest days,” commented one boater.

“It was very, very windy it was hard to keep anything near the boat,” said another.

Cleburne County deputies say the victims went down in 90 feet of water and boats equipped with sonar were called in to search the bottom of the lake.

But because of the depth, it’s a difficult recovery effort.
