POCAHONTAS, AR – An eight-year-old boy is recovering after being bitten by a skunk with rabies.
George Pratt Jr., Pocahontas Animal Control officer, said this is the first human rabies case he has seen in seven years.
Pratt said the child was shooting at the skunk. When he went to pick it up, the skunk was still alive and bit the child.
His grandparents took him to get treated for the bite.
“The veterinarian beheaded the skunk and sent it off to the lab up in Little Rock and it was confirmed positive, so the child received all the shots for rabies,” said Pratt.
Pratt said he has received many calls about skunks with rabies in the area.
