TEXARKANA, TX (KTAL) – A man faces charges after he allegedly stole a car from a business parking lot in Texarkana, Texas.

The incident happened around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 2800 block of New Boston Rd.

The vehicle’s owner told police that he had left the keys in his burgundy Mini Cooper while he briefly went inside the business to pay a bill.

According to a report, while the man was inside, a suspect wearing a black hoodie and blue shorts was seen entering the vehicle and driving off.

A short while later officers pulled over a vehicle that was similar to the one that was reported stolen. Detectives also learned that the buyer’s tags on the vehicle had been replaced with a fake Arkansas license plate.

The driver, Richard Whitaker, 25, told police that he had taken the car to move back home to Arkansas. He also said that the other occupant had no idea that he had stolen the car before offering him a ride.

Whitaker was arrested and taken to jail for Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle.

The second occupant was not charged and was released at the scene.
