LITTLE ROCK, AR– Saturday is the last day the Salvation Army Thrift Store will be open because the store is losing money.

Major Jim Taylor says there used to be more retail shopping in the area on 65th and Geyer Springs. But now stores are moving to West Little Rock, leaving the current location mainly industrial.

“We’ve been looking for the past year and a half for alternate locations and haven’t been able to find one that is either large enough or has enough warehouse space with it, and within the right price range,” said Taylor.

Shoppers say the store has made a huge impact on their families in recent years.

“It really helps people like me, that don’t have a job, get things for my family. I really hate to see them go,” said shopper Erin Randolph.

Major Taylor says the Army has set up a partnership with Goodwill to help Central Arkansas families who just can’t afford to buy clothes or furniture. But the Major admits closing the store is a very tough decision he didn’t want to make.

“In order to be a good steward, we need to step out of this business because it is losing money,” said Taylor.

Right now, it is unclear if the store will reopen.
