POYEN, AR – While many of us would rather stay inside during and after an ice storm, power outages force some people somewhere, anywhere they can find heat.

The power is out elsewhere in Poyen but David Teel’s Grocery was open for business Monday (2/16).

“We’re the only grocery store in town,” Teel said. “If I can be here and safe, I’ll be here.”

David knows his place is in high demand before and after a winter storm.

“Milk, bread, the usual stuff,” David went on. “Toilet paper, cigarettes, snuff.. the basics you got to have.”

Once the power goes out though, that need doesn’t stop. That’s why Teel stays open, whether it’s for goods or gas.

Entergy typically gives customers an estimate on when power should be restored. Monday it was 10 p.m.

If it lasts any longer people like Marie Schoggin, who lives south of Poyen, will be forced to get out.

“The power’s not tough. Being cold is,” she said. “I just assume stay in here rather than get up and down these steps.”

For the rest of Teel’s visitors, having some place to go and some place to depend on is nice to have on a “ice” day like Monday.
