Tuesday night, the Pulaski County Quorum Court passed two amendments concering the Lake Maumelle Watershed.
The watershed has been a topic of discussion for several years, as the county prepares to put land use and zoning rules in place.
Many people worry restrictions will hurt land owners.
Others feel the restrictions will not do enough to protect the watersource which serves 400,000 people in central Arkansas.
Quorum Court member Shane Stacks explained what Tuesday’s decisions mean.
“What we did tonight was two things. One, we got everybody on the same page whether you agree with the ordinance or don’t agree with the ordinance. Now every group that’s involved has the same version of the ordinance to debate about, and in the past that’s not been happening. We’ve had, you know, this camp that’s been talking about things that we were doing six months ago or a year and a half ago. The second thing we did, and I like this, we passed an amendment, not the ordinance, the ordinance will come up again some time early 2013, but we passed amendments that ease restrictions on the land owners,” says Stacks.
The full Quorum Court, with five new memebrs, should vote on the new rules this winter.
