Update (Nov. 3):
CARROLL COUNTY, AR (News release) – On Monday, Nov. 3, Boone County Sheriff Mike Moore said the Boone County Sheriff’s Office had completed an investigation into alleged sexual contact between Charles Briley and a juvenile. Moore declined to identify the alleged victim because of their age but did say the juvenile was a member of Briley’s family. He said an affidavit charging Briley with Rape and Sexual Assault had been completed and was being forwarded to the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for filing of formal charges.

Charles Briley, 38, was recently taken into custody by the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators with Carroll County had assisted Boone County authorities for some time on the investigation which began several months ago when allegations about Briley initially surfaced. Boone County and Carroll County authorities began working together as some of the offenses were reported to have occurred in both counties.

Sheriff Mike Moore said the successful investigation was the result of the teamwork of a number of agencies. He said the Arkansas State Police, Grandma’s House Children’s Advocacy Center, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office and the Boone County Sheriff’s office all had a part in the process. “The result,” said Moore “is a safer community for everyone because of the efforts made by these agencies. Although the case went on for several months they continued moving a little closer to Briley’s arrest each day.”

Charles Briley is being held at the Carroll County Jail on separate charges but will now also face charges of Rape and Sexual Assault in Boone County. Bond on the Boone County charges was set at $100,000.

Original story (Oct. 28):
CARROLL COUNTY, AR – The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office says a man wanted in two rape investigations was caught hiding at a sex offender’s house Monday.

Sheriff’s investigators and the Arkansas Community Corrections Special Response Team say Charles Briley has an absconder warrant in several jurisdictions and a rape warrant out of Carroll County. They say he is also a person of interest in a Boone County rape case.

On Monday, investigators say they found Briley at Howard Hughes’ home on County Road 8534. Hughes was convicted of rape in 1986 and is a level 3 sex offender. The sheriff’s office says Hughes lied and claimed that Briley was not staying at the home.

According to investigators, Briley tried to escape by running out the back door into the woods but was caught after a short chase. He injured his leg and was taken to Mercy Hospital in Berryville before being transported to the Carroll County Detention Center. He is being held on a $500,000 bond.

Hughes was also arrested for hindering apprehension.
