LITTLE ROCK, AR – Crunching under tires, slowly melting into sludge. Ice from Monday morning’s storm remains on central Arkansas highways more than 12 hours after falling.

“It’s OK as long as you take your time, not in a hurry you can make it.”

Frozen streets kept most people at home, but not Shantell Brown.

“Thankful for four-wheel drive. I got out safely and made it to Walgreens to pick up movies now getting gas and going home to eat roast macaroni,” says Brown.

She says she was shocked at what greeted her.

“When I first got out I saw a few cars going fast. That was very crazy you could hit an ice spot, you need to take your time,” says Brown.

Highway crews say days of using salt brine helped clear lanes on Interstates 430 and 630. But other popular roads including Chenal Parkway received less attention than Brown would have hoped.

“I expected to see it more clear. I expected to see the salt trucks but unfortunately I guess we are having to do the work ourselves, driving on and breaking it up,” says Brown.

Jessie Tims says he was lucky he had no problem driving around for work. “It’s been chaotic. Cars everywhere on the side of the road. We didn’t have no trouble but it looked like a lot of others on the road had trouble.”

After dark both drivers realized the best way to navigate the conditions is to make their way home.

“As it gets later it gets cooler and things are freezing up. I’m going home to get out if it,” says Brown.

City crews will be making the rounds continuously and state crews will be out all night.
