Residents Say Homeless Camp Popped Up in Their Neighborhood

LITTLE ROCK, AR — People living in a Little Rock neighborhood say an abandoned building in their area appears to be turning into a homeless camp.

Folks call the West Markham Professional Building, at the intersection of Markham and Tyler, an eyesore.

They say the old medical building is attracting the wrong kind of people to their neighborhood.

One woman, who didn’t want to be identified, saying she feels insecure.

“There’s an issue of the homeless, the mold and the maggots,” she said.

Photos one resident took show a large pile of trash along with clothing and luggage in the shrubs nearby.

“It began the end of October when we were approached by a homeless man asking for sexual favors,” said another woman, who also didn’t want to be identified.

It doesn’t end there.

We talked to another lady who said she’s seen naked men in the parking lot doing inappropriate things.

Neighbors say the building has been empty for at least a couple years and nothing’s been done to get rid of it making the problems even worse.

We did talk to the real estate agent, listing the property, he told us they’re looking into development options for the area.

He also said there is a security guard who watches the property between 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.

But neighbors say that’s not doing a lot of good.

“And generally we do not appreciate multi-millionaires leaving their baggage in our neighborhood for us to cleanup,” one neighbor said.

Neighbors say another concern is the mold they’ve found on the outside of the building.

They fear it could be a health hazard.

We’re told the city of Little Rock is looking into the issue.
