TIPTON COUNTY, IN – An Arkansas family of five died in crash on an Indiana highway.
Friday morning, Indiana State Police say the family from Rogers was traveling in a 2001 Jaguar southbound on US-31 near 250 in Tipton County.
WHTR reports that the driver lost control, over corrected, went off the road into the median and entered the northbound lanes. A 2011 Peterbilt semi-trailer was heading northbound as the Jaguar entered the lane from the median. The truck driver moved to the outer shoulder to avoid hitting the car, but the front of the truck still hit the Jaguar on the driver’s side.
All five occupants of the Jaguar were pulled out rescue workers. Four members of the family– Dennis Nguyen, 43; his wife, Thu-Ha Thi Cao, 44; their 9-year-old son, David Hungyinh Nguyen; and 7-year-old Lindsay Caovan Nguyen — were pronounced dead at the scene.
Their daughter, Linda Havy Nguyen, 14, was taken by helicopter to an Indianapolis hospital with life-threatening injuries. She later died.
All five were believed to be wearing their seat belts.
“We were working numerous crashes in the district on icy road conditions, but whether this was [caused by the weather] or not is just an assumption,” Master Trooper Paul Daugherty told WTHR in a phone interview.
The truck driver was taken to the hospital to be treated for pain and was later released.
The family was on their way back home from Michigan when the wreck happened.
