Russellville Man Rising in Ranks of Arkansas National Guard

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, AR – A Russellville man is rising in the ranks of the Arkansas National Guard.

A ceremony will be held in North Little Rock this weekend to formally promote Col. Keith Klemmer to the rank of brigadier general, as deputy adjutant general for the Arkansas National Guard (ANG).

Klemmer is filling the second highest position in the ANG, which was left vacant following the retirement of Brigadier General William Johnson in early January.

The ceremony will take place in the National Guard Professional Education Center’s Militia Hall auditorium at Camp Robinson Saturday afternoon at two o’clock.

COLONEL KLEMMER’S BIO:
Colonel Klemmer was born June 30, 1964 in Jonesboro. He is a 1982 graduate of Brookland High School and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Business from Arkansas State University in 1987. He later received a Masters of Strategic Studies degree from the United States Army War College in 2007.

Colonel Klemmer began his military career in 1983 beginning with Basic Combat Training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and Advanced Individual Training at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama. He entered the Reserve Officer Training Program at Arkansas State University in the fall of 1983 and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in 1985 at the age of 20. 

Colonel Klemmer has served in a variety of positions in the 39th Infantry Brigade, 142nd Fires Brigade, and 87th Troop Command including Battery Commander, Battalion Operations Officer, Battalion Executive Officer, Battalion Commander, Brigade Fire Support Officer, Brigade Executive Officer, and 142nd Fires Brigade Commander. He is a veteran of both Operation Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Colonel Klemmer entered Title 32 Active Guard/Reserve service as a full-time Soldier in March 1994.  His full-time assignments have included Battalion Training Officer, Battalion and Brigade Administrative Officer, Recruiting and Retention Executive Officer, Recruiting and Retention Manager, Deputy Property and Fiscal Officer for Arkansas, State Training Officer, and Chief of Staff for the Arkansas Army National Guard. In October 2011, Colonel Klemmer became the Chief of Staff, JFHQ Arkansas.

Colonel Klemmer’s awards and decorations include two Bronze Star Medals, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Achievement Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Arkansas Commendation Medal, and the Ancient Order of Saint Barbara. He was inducted into the Arkansas Recruiting and Retention Hall of Fame in 2003.

Colonel Klemmer and his wife Sandra live in Russellville; they have two children, Rachel and Gunnar.
