BENTON, AR — Saline County Sheriff Bruce Pennington has submitted another letter informing the department of his retirement, to be effective Oct. 1.
Pennington, who pleaded guilty to resisting arrest and public intoxication in August, is coming under fire again after documents were released Thursday indicating he’d been using the Saline County Sheriff’s Office credit card and campaign account for personal use.
On Friday, Aug. 30, Pennington submitted a similar letter to the Saline County Quorum Court, which read, “Effective October 1, 2013, I will be retiring as Saline County Sheriff.”
The following Monday, he presented the quorum court with a different letter that stated, “This letter supersedes the letter given on August 30, 2013. I am amending my retirement date to January 1, 2015
Pennington delivered a letter by hand to Judge Lanny Fite and a member of the quorum court on Friday that read, “Effective October 1, 2013, I will be retiring as Sheriff of Saline County. Please find enclosed my application for retirement annuity with Apers.”
The sheriff spoke with FOX16 on the phone and said his retirement has nothing to do with the latest information regarding his personal use of campaign funds and the department credit card, but is a result of the quorum court prying into his department.
Pennington says he loves the department too much and he’s doing what’s best for his employees.
