Scholarships to Parents of First-Generation Students Offered by ATU

RUSSELLVILLE, AR (News Release) – Parents of first-generation college students at Arkansas Tech University will soon be able to take one course at the institution with no charge for tuition or fees.

The Arkansas Tech Board of Trustees gave its approval for the initiative during a meeting at the Ross Pendergraft Library and Technology Center on Thursday.

“Perhaps this offer will serve as a launching point toward academic goals that were deferred earlier in life,” said Dr. Robin E. Bowen, Arkansas Tech president. “Perhaps this offer will simply give parents and students a common experience as they discuss the value of a college education. Regardless, we are proud to be able to make this opportunity available to the parents of our first-generation students.”

Beginning with the fall 2015 semester, each parent or legal guardian of a first-generation college student, as confirmed on the student’s Free Application for Federal Student Aid form, may enroll in one course with no charge for tuition or fees under the following parameters:

–Parent completes an admission application and meets the admission criteria for a non-degree seeking candidate;

–Parent may register for one class with a full tuition and fee scholarship;

–Only classes without prerequisites are eligible under this policy;

–Free class for parent is only available during the first year that the student attends classes provided the student maintains continuous enrollment;

–And each parent is eligible to receive the scholarship for one class, one time only.

Parents interested in learning more about the program are asked to contact Vicki Bills in the Roy and Christine Sturgis Academic Advising Center, which is located on the first floor of Rothwell Hall at Arkansas Tech in Russellville.
