SHERWOOD, AR – Sunday night, Sherwood neighbors could rest easier after firefighters put out a twenty acre wildfire.
At one point, the smoke got close to several homes, but firefighters got control of the fire before it damaged any buildings.
“I saw all the smoke, and we had a fire back there yesterday. A neighbor said she saw a few kinds running from back there, then some flames flew up,” said Deland Smith who lives in Sherwood. “I’m kind of scared to leave the house today because you never know if the wind’s gonna catch it and blow it this way because it’s real dry back there.”
Firefighters from the Arkansas Forestry Commission and several departments fought the flames for a second day Sunday near the intersection of Lynnwood Drive and Lakewood Drive in Sherwood.
“They are cutting a line around the burnt area and that way it doesn’t spread. And then, we’re gonna burn what’s inside that circle,” says John Sawyer with the Sherwood Fire Department.
Firefighters tell FOX16 the wind kicked back up Sunday morning, putting homes in danger.
“Today, I was very worried. It was just two houses up today, and they’re still there fighting the fire today and I was very concerned about that,” said Smith.
No one got hurt, but Smith still has a plan in case fire gets close to his house again.
“My plan is to grab my dog and my wife and leave,” says Smith.
Firefighters are still not sure how the fire started.
