Economic Impact Of LRSD State Takeover

LITTLE ROCK, AR — Dressed in all black and holding candles, dozens of Little Rock students and teachers took to the steps of the Capitol tonight.

LRSD Teacher, Jennifer Lusk, said, “To come out and show we are mourning the death of our district tonight.”

Lusk says teachers fear the unknown after the Arkansas State Board of Education voted Wednesday to take over the district.

Lusk said, “We were all absolutely in shock!”

But the CEO of the Little Rock Regional Chamber of Commerce feels differently. He says the state takeover could benefit the city by showing prospective businesses that Little Rock is working towards improving education.

Jay Chesshir says as it stands now, businesses looking to move to the city can check out the district’s test scores and compare those numbers to other communities. So, he says Wednesday’s vote to improve education could encourage future development here.

He said, “I think it’s an opportunity for a new day.”
