MAYFLOWER, AR — For two and a half weeks, crews have been working day and night to deal with the oil spill that soiled a Mayflower neighborhood.
Now were learning Exxon Mobil, owners of the pipeline that ruptured, is taking big steps toward compensating the residents of the Northwoods subdivision.
“I’m not sure what to think yet,” said Chris Harrell, who got a call from an Exxon Mobil representative on Monday.
Here is some of what Exxon Mobil is offering:
Each of the 62 homeowners in Northwoods will get $10,000 their for their inconveniences.
11 homeowners who had oil flow across their property can sell to Exxon Mobil for the pre-spill value.
For three years, Exxon Mobil will guarantee the sale of all homes in the subdivision at a price as if the spill never happened.
For those who want to stay, Exxon Mobil will make a one-time payment for any loss of property value within three years.
Harrell is planning to meet with his lawyer and Exxon Mobil representatives Wednesday.
“The best offer is never the first one, but at least they’re starting the process of discussing how everyone will be compensated,” he said.
Residents still worry about how the value of their homes will be assessed now and in the future.
They also worry about the future of a neighborhood they’ve grown to love.
“You hate to lose the individual community here in the neighborhood and basically that’s lost, because I’m sure most if not all, especially those displaced, will probably end up elsewhere,” Harrell said.
