TEXARKANA, TX (KTAL) – A local man is recovering after accidentally shooting himself with a gun he allegedly stole from another person’s vehicle.
It happened around 5:30 a.m. on Monday. Officers with the Texarkana, Texas Police Department were called to Wadley Hospital where Dakota Young, 18, was being treated for a gunshot wound to his buttocks.
Police say Young initially told officers that he was shot while walking in the 1100 block of Pine Street by an unknown suspect.
A witness who was with Young at the time of the shooting led officers to the 1100 block of Olive Street where they found a .38 caliber revolver.
It soon became apparent that Young was not being truthful after evidence gathered at the crime scene coupled with the nature of the gunshot wound led the officers to believe it was self-inflicted. Young then recanted and admitted to shooting himself.
The revolver and a cellphone, which was in Young’s possession, were both reported stolen from a vehicle in the 100 block of Olive Street.
The case is still under investigation and police say criminal charges may be filed after Young’s release from the hospital.
