School starts for most Central Arkansas students August 20th, and that means the rush is on to stock up on school supplies for the first day of class.
Saturday, August 4th and Sunday, August 5th parents can pick up everything their children need for school without paying sales tax.
Retailer have the shelves stocked and the aisles clear for customers for maximum ease finding everything they need to check off their back to school supply list.
Target has an entire section of the store dedicated to backpacks, pencils, notebooks, calculators, and all kinds of other items. Executive Team Leader Kimberly Boling says they have lists printed out from area schools to make school shopping easier on parents. “On school lists teachers always ask for hand sanitizer and paper towels.”
Parents say it’s stressful enough to just get in and out of the store without forgetting anything. “I have four children. Two in college, one in high school, and one in elementary school, so I have a wide range of supplies I need to buy.”
Tax free weekend means extra savings for Monica Alderson. “When you have two kids, you have all the shoes, clothes, belts, and earrings, and all that stuff adds up.”
Boling is expecting big crowds at Target both Saturday and Sunday. “Last year it was busy so I think a lot of people are coming today and Sunday morning as well.”
Some shoppers are trying to beat the rush by shopping early even though the tax exemption doesn’t kick in until Saturday.
When asked if she looks for items on sale, one mom said, “I do not. My time is more valuable than that.”
Tax free items aren’t just limited to notebooks and binders. College students can even pick up refrigerators and microwaves for dorm rooms.
Monica Alderson says she plans to make multiple trips to maximize her savings. “We’re coming back tomorrow to do some clothes shopping. Today was just school supplies because I wanted to beat the rush because I think it’s going to be crazy this weekend.”
Boling reminds Target customers to use their Red Card 5% discount along with the sales tax exemption.
