Teen in Cabot Kills Neighbor’s Pet Goose

CABOT, AR — A shooting death of a pet goose leaves a Cabot neighborhood saddened.

Melinda Jones has six children and two pet geese but Monday morning, her goose count was cut by one.

“They came to eat and apparently that was their death sentence,” said Jacobs. “I was in the garage and I heard two gunshots.”

Jacobs said a teenage friend of her neighbor’s grandson shot one goose while it was feeding in her yard–a routine the two geese had for seven years.

“No you can’t shoot them; they’re wildlife,” said Arkansas Game and Fish Assistant Chief Keith Stephens.

Stephens said the teen shooter admitted to the killing and was fined for hunting out of season.

“It’s up to a $1000 and up to 30 days in jail,” said Stephens.

Neighbors, from where the bullets came, said off-camera the friend was told not to shoot anything and they are upset about the killing.

Jacobs said looking out at her pond where the geese once laid eggs every year won’t be the same. She is heartbroken the nicknamed “quack family” has lost their mother goose.

“We saw them since they were really tiny chicks. So yeah, it’s really sad,” said Jacobs.

According to the Arkansas Game and Fish regulations, hunters using firearms within 150 yards of a residence must have written permission from the owner or occupant of that residence.
