Toad Suck Park Closed Due to High Waters Monday

FAULKNER COUNTY, AR – With many areas experiencing severe flooding, Faulkner County leaders are taking steps to warn residents of potential flooding to come.

The park is usually open until 10 p.m. While you wouldn’t be able to see much from outside the park at this hour, we moved to a home nearby along the Arkansas River.

Heavy rain swelling the Arkansas River. High waters are now covering parts of Toad Suck Park in Faulkner County.

“There’s always a chance a levy could breach, there’s always a chance a gate will malfunction,” says Faulkner Co. PIO David Hogue.

Faulkner County’s David Hogue and other agencies met Monday preparing for the potential of more flood to sweep through the area.

“All the areas in red are the spots that are likely to see water,” Hogue says.

They’ve already identified several county roads that are under water. Now Hogue is warning residents to take any necessary precautions.

“Sand Gap Road, you’ve got Owen Road, Lolly Road,” says Hogue.

The accumulation of heavy rain is covering a lot of dry land here at Toad Suck Park. Officials are expecting the water to rise even more by Wednesday morning.

“The picnic tables are almost covered and when it gets that high, it’s dangerous,” says Conway resident Robbie Thorn.

FOX16 caught up with Robbie Thorn who was taking his grandkids to the playground, but they were greeted with a locked gate.

“I have seen it pretty high but I’ve never seen the water running through this little creek right here,” Thorn says.

And he’s never seen the river now flowing over steps, grills and soon picnic tables. The areas in red are 280 feet above sea level.

But by Wednesday Hogue expects the waters could reach almost 278 feet, “If people remember what happened in 2008, that’s what you could expect in 2015 apparently.”

Hogue expects the Arkansas River to Crest Wednesday morning. So what you see now could rise five more feet.
