CLINTON, AR – A 72-year-old man is recovering after he was hit by a truck as it crashed through a post office wall.
Witnesses to the accident say it looked like he could have been cut in half while pinned between the truck and an inside wall.
Despite the crash and his injuries, the man on the wrong end of that accident is able to share his story.
“That’s just the daily routine of a retired person I guess.”
But it stopped November 6, you see the 72-year-old can get around but not all that well.
He’s spending most of his days now with his left leg propped up on his recliner.
He was on the wrong side of the wall when this hole was made.
“I didn’t have time to react to anything,” says Burgess.
Standing at a table in the post office reading a letter, John heard a truck engine rev up.
“Next thing I know the wall crumbles and the truck comes right through the wall,” says Burgess.
A blue Dodge Ram 1500 had him pinned him against the wall of mail boxes.
According to a Clinton Police report witnesses say they watched as the truck pulled into the spot and stopped but tires began to squeal, and the truck slammed through the brick wall.
Four people immediately ran to help John.
“Said well my goodness somebody’s tried to go through the post office.”
While very unlikely and the last thing you would expect, the story has some looking over their shoulder.
“One of these days I know it’s gonna happen and it did.”
“I’d be careful about going in the post office.”
But John says he knows it was an accident.
The driver told police she hit the gas pedal rather than the brake.
And now John, facing a knee replacement might switch up his routine.
“The moral to the whole story is don’t read your mail in the post office,” says John.
John says you can look back on it and laugh and he does now, but it wasn’t very funny at the time.
Fortunately, other than his injured knee he’s doing okay.
No injuries to the driver were reported.
