UAPB Expects to See 800 More Students on Campus This Fall

PINE BLUFF, AR – The University of Arkansas, Pine Bluff is predicting a spike in students on campus this semester.

UAPB said they may see about eight hundred more students this year compared to last year.

Friday, teens and their parents unloaded bin after bin of dorm items.

All are getting ready fro the start of the fall semester at UAPB.

“I’m excited,” said UAPB student Matthew Metcalf.

Metcalf is a freshman, majoring in Business Management and also has a band scholarship.

“They the first people to offer me a scholarship. I might as well go there and show my support … and I like music,” said Metcalf.

UAPB Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs Elbert Bennett said the hundreds of students expected this year is something they have not seen since 2009.

“I’m just like a big kid. I love hustle and bustle of new students and parents coming to campus,” said Bennett.

Bennett said he believes the spike in applicants has to do with a number of things.

The school is finding ways to make scholarships available to students, having two school nursing programs back in place and being there more for out-of-state students.

But he said their biggest contributor this year has been their summer LIONS program … it acts like a voluntary summer school for incoming freshmen and saw nearly 300 students this summer … their largest class so far.

“We found once students come to our campus ,that they say ‘Wow, I had no idea that this was UAPB,” said Bennett.

Something Metcalf agrees with.

“I feel in love more with the school. I got an understanding of what the school was about,” said Metcalf.

The university said they will know the final enrollment number a few weeks after school begins and says they have plenty of room to house all the students.
