PINE BLUFF, AR — The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff has been caught in the middle of a shooting, officials said, was not related to its campus.

According to Tisha Arnold with UAPB, the incident happened on Tuesday during the day. Arnold stated a group of people who were not students had an altercation that traveled to the campus and resulted in shots being fired.

She noted the university was relieved no one was hurt, but some students said that wasn’t enough to make them feel completely safe walking around campus.

Cara Brooks said she was tired of senseless violent acts in the city of Pine Bluff reaching her school.

“I believe that the shootings are absolutely ridiculous,” she continued. “I don’t believe that Pine Bluff should get blamed for the shootings that are occurring outside the university. We aren’t doing anything to deserve that, we’re getting a bad reputation on our school.”

The freshman said she often got out of track practice at night time and that sometimes she feel uneasy walking home.

“But the type of shooting they’re having are during the daytime,” she said. “So that’s worse because if they can do it here in the daytime, I could be walking to my class and somebody can shoot me.”

Brooks wasn’t the only student who said the random violence made her feel unsafe at times.

Jonathan McClinton said he was from Pine Bluff and said he was familiar with the crime in the that wasn’t connected to UAPB. He did admit Tuesday’s incident made him a little concerned about walking to class.

“You just have to look over your shoulder just in case, like something  happens or a car rolls up slowly, you don’t know if they’re trying to do something to you.”

Kahmron Hymes found out about the shooting when he got out of class. He said it made him glad he wasn’t walking by the school’s new Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Building when it happened.

“That could have been me, like standing by there. I could have been a victim of it, something so stupid,” he said.
