Update (April 10, 1:30 p.m.):
BAY, AR – We are learning new information involving a local K-9 officer that was found dead Thursday night in Craighead County.

Police say Vox, a 10-year-old German Shepherd escaped from his kennel on Thursday night. After it was discovered he was missing, the Bay Police Department, along with the Bay Fire Department, searched the town for the dog but came up empty.

Around 10 p.m., officers got a call from Zachary Worley, 26,  who claimed the dog was at his address on Lunsford Avenue.

When the K-9’s handler and another officer arrived at Worley’s address, he told them that he had discovered the dog in his backyard with a pet rabbit in its mouth. Worley went on to tell officers that the dog was trying to kill the rabbit, so he then shot the dog with a .22 rifle.

“The individual was very cooperative and forthcoming with information when he learned of our missing K-9 and led the officers to where the deceased dog was located,” said Bay Police Chief Paul Keith in a news release issued Friday afternoon.

Worley was then taken into police custody for further investigation, according to a report. On Friday he was charged with one count of Discharging a Firearm inside the City Limits, a misdemeanor.

Worley’s is set to appear in Craighead County District Court June 23, at 1 p.m.

The incident is still an on-going investigation.

Arrangements are pending for a memorial service for Vox.
