Update: Pine Bluff Dog Owner Charged in Deadly Attack

PINE BLUFF, AR – Charges have been filed against a local man after a fatal dog attack.

John Chester Smith, 62, was charged Wednesday with manslaughter in the March 21 mauling death of De’Trick Omar Johnson, 36. 

Officials said a pack of pit bull dogs belonging to Smith attacked Johnson.

PINE BLUFF, AR — The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is working to ensure the owner of the pit bulls that mauled a man to death is prosecuted. 

Deputies say the dogs have a history of aggression. But since only one of the two prior victims reported the attacks, the dogs were not seized.

On Saturday morning, deputies responded to CJ’S Garage on Thomas Road. When they arrived De’trick Johnson, 36, had been fatally mauled by seven pit bulls. 

Four dogs were killed, two were captured and one is on the loose. 

Deputies say a victim from a prior attack less than two months ago did not comply with the police investigation, allowing the dogs to not be tied to CJ’s. Authorities say they will ensure the owner now will face charges.

“It’s an unfortunate tragedy. Nobody should lose their life in that manner,” said Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Major Lafayette Woods. 

Deputies say they are collecting evidence to give to the prosecuting attorney’s office.

The last pit bull on the loose is brown and white. It was last seen near I-530.
