Washington Co. Cleans Up after Oil and Diesel Fuel Spill

WASHINGTON COUNTY, AR – Oil and diesel fuel spilled onto streets in Johnson and Fayetteville, spanning the length of about 10 football fields.

For nearly four hours, a portion of Ball St. had to be closed while crews cleaned up the mess. Fayetteville firefighters believe the leak came from a diesel truck leaving nearby a nearby warehouse.

Hazmat crews used back-hoes and bull dozers to spread 20-30 cubic yards of sand to absorb the fuel and oil so they could reopen the roads.

“We just want to make sure there wasn’t anything continuing to leak on the roads,” said Capt, Shawn Shelton with the Fayetteville Fire Department. “It could have been a lot worse.”

The area where the spill occurred is rural and firefighters tell us there were not any homes or bodies of water in danger of being contaminated.
