WASHINGTON COUNTY, AR (KNWA) – The Washington County Sheriff confirms murder suspect David Ervin Browning killed himself in his cell overnight.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, Browning, 57, was discovered in his bed with a pair of pants around his neck shortly before 12:30 a.m. by detention officers making nightly rounds.
They attempted to revive him and on-site medical personnel determined there was no pulse and performed CPR. Central EMS and Fayetteville Fire Department responded and took over CPR before transporting Browning to Washington Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead just after 1:30 a.m.
According to a preliminary investigation, Browning hung himself. Deputies had checked detainees every hour leading up to the discovery and Browning was the only detainee in his cell. His body will be sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab to confirm cause and manner of death.
In August of 2013, David Browning was arrested on charges of stabbing and killing his 76-year-old girlfriend, Shirley Wolfe.
He had pleaded not guilty and was awaiting trial.
