LITTLE ROCK, AR – The Pulaski County Planning Board voted unanimously to recommend the quorum court’s approval of the Lake Maumelle Watershed Land Use Plan Tuesday night.
According to the planning board, the new regulations will protect the county’s water source, which serves approximately 400,000 people. For hours, the board listened to arguing and yelling from angry property owners who oppose zoning regulations and spoke out against the plan.
The planning board originally suggested limiting public comment to 30 minutes. It ended up that about 30 people were given three minutes each to give comment about the land use plan.
“It’s a nightmare in our lives. It’s nothing but overregulation,” said Joseph Doleman.
In the end, their objections didn’t matter. After three hours the board voted unanimously to pass the plan to the Pualski County Quorum Court saying, “While the plan may be considered less than perfect, we understand that it could be refined through the legislative process. After careful consideration, we deem it the best option currently available for the long range protection of Central Arkansas Water.”
Some of those who spoke during the public comment were against developers and big business. Members of the Occupy Little Rock movement attended the meeting, they say that if the quorum court passes the zoning regulations, it may Occupy Lake Maumelle.
