LITTLE ROCK, AR – Zoo staff used fire extinguishers to keep the cats away from the child. They’re trained to use the
extinguishers to hold back dangerous animals like the jaguars during the rescue.

Other zoo employees then lowered a ladder into the exhibit and picked up the toddler. He was handed to his father and
taken to the hospital.

The Little Rock Fire Department (LRFD) arrived in minutes but when they got to the zoo, employees had already rescued the child.

“I was surprised that it had already resolved itself. Engine 3 had a good response time and they got there so the zoo personnel evidently acted rapidly,” says Captain Jason Weaver of the LRFD.

After the toddler fell, the zoo did issue a code red. The fire department says for them that means to send a couple of trucks and a search and rescue team.

We’ve called the zoo and City of Little Rock for more details on the code red response and how it works, but haven’t heard back from them yet.

The LRFD did help with the medical care of the child. Captain Weaver says the boy was alert and in good spirits.

But at last check he’s in critical condition.
