A-State’s Knighten Tabbed to Davey O’Brien Watch List

JONESBORO, AR (News release) – Arkansas State senior quarterback Fredi Knighten has been tabbed as one of 24 quarterbacks in the nation to be named to the 2015 Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award Watch List.

Knighten, the only signal caller from the Sun Belt to make the list, enters the 2015 season as the holder of 25, top-10 records in the Red Wolves’ record books for single game, season and career performances. He needs just 245 more yards of total offense to become the seventh A-State player to break 5,000 yards in a career and he needs 1,464 more passing yards to become just the fifth player in the program’s history to surpass 5,000 passing yards.

The Pulaski Academy product also finished the 2014 season as a First-Team All-Sun Belt Conference selection and ranked among the NCAA’s best in several statistical categories. Lindy’s Magazine has named Knighten the “Most Valuable Player in the Sun Belt” entering this season, while he as been a Preseason All-Sun Belt Conference pick by Lindy’s, Athlon Sports, ESPN and Sporting News.

The field of quarterbacks will be narrowed to 16 semifinalists on Monday, Nov. 2. From that list, the Foundation and the Selection Committee will announce the three finalists on Tuesday, Nov. 24. The 2015 Davey O’Brien winner will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, Dec. 10.

The Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award is presented annually to the nation’s best college quarterback and is the oldest and most prestigious national quarterback award. The Davey O’Brien Award honors candidates who exemplify Davey O’Brien’s enduring character while exhibiting teamwork, sportsmanship and leadership in both academics and athletics. The award is overseen by the Davey O’Brien Foundation, which is headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, and has given away more than $900,000 in scholarships and university grants to help high school and college athletes transform leadership on the field into leadership in life.
