LAFAYETTE, LA – The Arkansas State baseball team outhit Louisiana-Lafayette and got a quality start from David Owen, but couldn’t find a way to cross the plate in a 3-0 loss to the Ragin’ Cajuns Sunday afternoon at M.L. Tigue Moore Field in Lafayette, La.
Owen tossed seven innings and gave up three runs on five hits with no walks and nine strikeouts. Colton Kibler and Coulton Lee combined to throw one inning of relief and didn’t allow a run. Offensively, Austin Baker led the Red Wolves (11-14, 3-8 SBC) with three hits, while Zach George extended his on-base streak to 42 games with a third-inning single and Matt Burgess extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a base hit in the eighth inning.
Evan Guillory earned the win for ULL (15-10, 7-4 SBC) after throwing 6.2 innings and allowing no runs on seven hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Wyatt Marks threw 2.1 scoreless innings to earn his first career save and Stefan Trosclair led the Ragin’ Cajuns with two hits and two RBIs.
Louisiana-Lafayette struck first in the game when Evan Powell drove the first pitch of the bottom of the third over the left field fence off Owen to put the Ragin’ Cajuns on top 1-0. ULL extended its lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning on a two-out, two-run double from Trosclair down the left-field line.
Those runs came after the Red Wolves had their best scoring chance. A-State loaded the bases with three straight singles in the top of the fifth, but George ripped a line drive right to the first baseman, who tagged Baker out for the inning-ending double play. The Red Wolves also had runners on first and second with one out in the third inning, but Burgess grounded into a double play to end the inning.
