JONESBORO, AR (News release) – The Wuerffel Trophy has announced that Arkansas State senior quarterback Fredi Knighten has been named to its list of 80 players from College football’s College Bowl Subdivision up for consideration for the award.
Knighten enjoyed a career year in 2014 and earned First-Team All-Sun Belt Conference honors and ranked among the nation’s top-50 in 12 statistical categories. He led the Sun Belt in total offense on his way to becoming No. 2 most efficient passer, threw the third most passing yards and the ninth most passing yards. He broke the school record for most plays in a game with 76 against Texas State and accounted for 449 yards of total offense against New Mexico State, just five yards shy of tying the school record for most in a single game.
The Little Rock, Ark., native has already received numerous preseason honors, including being named to the Watch List for the Maxwell Award and the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm watch list. He was a preseason First-Team All-Sun Belt Conference pick by Athlon Sports, Lindy’s, ESPN and Sporting News, while also being honored the conference’s “best scrambler” by Lindy’s and the “best quarterback under pressure” by Sporting News.
The All Sports Association in Fort Walton Beach Florida presents the Wuerffel Trophy, known as “College Football’s Premier Award for Community Service,” annually. Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Danny Wuerffel from the University of Florida, the Wuerffel Trophy is awarded to the FBS player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.
A National Selection Committee that includes college football television and print media, industry notables, former head coaches and prior Wuerffel Trophy recipients performs voting for the Wuerffel Trophy.
Nominations for the Wuerffel Trophy are made by the respective universities’ Sports Information departments and will close on October 15.
