CHICAGO, IL – A Conway High School standout has been named the 2014-15 Gatorade Arkansas Girls Basketball Player of the Year.
The honor goes to Jordan Danberry. She is the first Gatorade Arkansas Girls Basketball Player of the Year to be chosen from Conway High School. The award recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the court. The honor distinguishes Danberry as Arkansas’s best high school girls basketball player.
A news release issued on Thursday said two-time winner Danberry (she also won the award last year) joins Gatorade Arkansas Girls Basketball Players of the Year Tyler Scaife (2012-13 & 2011-12, Hall High School), Calli Berna (2010-11, Fayetteville High School), Morgan Hook (2009-10 & 2008-09, Rogers), Shekinna Stricklen (2007-08, Morrilton), and Whitney Zachariason (2006–07, Central Arkansas Christian) among the state’s list of former award winners.
The 5-foot-7 senior guard has led the Wampus Cats to a 24-6 record and a berth in the Class 7A championship game against Fayetteville, scheduled for March 14. The state’s returning Gatorade Girls Basketball Player of the Year, Danberry is averaging 14.0 points, 4.3 assists, 4.2 rebounds and 3.6 steals per game. The MVP of the 2014 state title game, she is a returning All-State selection and has been named to the USA TODAY’s All-USA Arkansas First Team.
Danberry has maintained a 3.37 GPA in the classroom. She has volunteered locally on behalf of youth basketball camps and the Boys and Girls Club of Conway.
“Danberry is explosive with the ball in her hands, can get to the rim and has a nice mid-range game as well,” said Jay Cook, head coach at Paragould High. “Her quickness, speed and athleticism makes her a serious threat defensively too.”
Danberry has signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball on scholarship at the University of Arkansas this fall.
She is now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Girls Basketball Player of the Year award.
This is the 30th year for the Gatorade program that honors the nation’s best high school athletes.
The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field, and awards one National Player of the Year in each sport.
